Build the specification from the structure outwards. Graded roofing battens provide the fixing points, while roofing underlays and membranes manage wind-driven moisture beneath the covering. The selected slate or tile sets the pitch limits, gauge, headlap and fixing pattern.

Most tiled and slated pitched roofs use a specified underlay beneath the battens. Its vapour resistance, drape, laps and ventilation strategy must suit the complete roof build-up.
Use the measured roof area, pitch, product coverage and required laps. Add allowances for cuts, breakage, ridges, verges and other details.
Only after they have been inspected against the current specification. Damaged, undersized or ungraded battens should not support a new covering.
