Heavy pressure can score softer materials, spread corrosion debris or snap bristles, so test a hidden area first and check that a wire brush is compatible with the substrate. For lighter smoothing and the final pass, move to sandpaper or steel wool rather than continuing with an aggressive brush.
Loose particles can travel further than expected. Cover nearby finishes with decorating surface protection and wear task-appropriate protective clothing, including eye and hand protection where the risk assessment calls for it. Brush and vacuum away residue afterwards, then make any repairs before applying primer or paint.
