Chains, Links & Hooks

Chain, Hooks and Links for Securing, Fastening and General DIY

MacBlair stocks a practical range of chains, links and hooks covering the everyday needs of trade and DIY projects alike. Galvanised and zinc-plated options feature throughout, giving weather-resistant choices for both indoor and outdoor use. Quick links, S-hooks, snap hooks and grab hooks are all available, making it easy to find the right connector for hanging, securing or fastening tasks.

Choosing the correct product comes down to the job at hand. Quick links screw shut to create a semi-permanent connection, making them well suited to load-bearing or safety-critical applications. S-hooks give a fast, tool-free attachment where loads are lighter and occasional adjustment is needed. Grab hooks sit flush against a chain link and hold position without slipping, useful anywhere a fixed length matters. Common applications include:

  • Hanging gates, barriers and signage
  • Securing loads during transport
  • General site and workshop fastening
  • Garden and agricultural use
  • Joining or extending chain lengths

For projects where chain work sits alongside other fixings, MacBlair carries a wide fixings range including anchors, cable ties and clips. Those working with threaded connections will also find relevant hardware in the eyebolts section, which pairs naturally with hooks and hanging chain. Rope and bungee alternatives sit alongside this category in the bungees, straps and rope range.

All products are available to order online for delivery across Northern Ireland, or to collect from a local MacBlair branch. The full fixings, chemicals and adhesives section covers everything needed to complete a project in one place.

Expansion Joint FAQ's

A quick link has a threaded collar that screws shut, creating a secure, semi-permanent connection. It cannot open accidentally once tightened, which makes it better suited to load-bearing or safety applications such as hanging gates or securing loads. A snap hook uses a spring-loaded gate that opens and closes quickly without tools, making it more convenient for tasks where you need to attach and detach regularly, such as leads, barriers or light hanging jobs. For anything load-critical, a quick link is generally the safer choice.

A grab hook has a narrow, straight-sided slot rather than a rounded opening. A chain link slides into this slot and is held firmly in place without being able to slip through. This makes grab hooks useful for fixing a chain at a specific length, such as when securing cargo or looping a chain back on itself. Always match the grab hook size to the chain diameter, as using a mismatched size reduces the strength of the connection significantly.

For outdoor use, galvanised chain is the most practical option. The galvanised coating protects against rust and corrosion, which matters in the UK's wet climate. Zinc-plated chain is suitable for light indoor use but will corrode more quickly when exposed to the elements. For particularly exposed environments, such as coastal or agricultural settings, stainless steel chain offers the highest level of corrosion resistance, though it comes at a higher cost.

S-hooks can be used for light load-bearing tasks, but they are not suitable for safety-critical or heavy-duty applications unless specifically rated and marked with a Safe Working Load (SWL). Because the open ends of an S-hook can straighten under excessive force, they should only be used within their stated capacity. For heavier or more permanent connections, a closed quick link or a grab hook provides a more secure and reliable fixing.

The most common way to join two chain lengths is with a quick link or a connecting link. Thread the quick link through the end links of both chains, then tighten the collar by hand. For a more permanent repair or connection, a coupling link can be used. Avoid simply hooking two grab hooks together, as grab hooks are designed to engage chain links, not other hooks, and a hook-to-hook connection is unreliable under load.
