Durable Concrete Flags for Patios and Pathways

Concrete paving slabs and flags provide a durable and functional surface solution for a variety of outdoor spaces, including garden patios, pedestrian pathways and utility areas. Available in standard formats such as 600x600mm and thicknesses like 50mm, these concrete units offer a straightforward approach to hard landscaping. When laying a stable foundation for these slabs, a compacted layer of quarry dust provides the necessary load-bearing support to prevent sinking over time.


These paving units are manufactured to comply with standard load-bearing and frost resistance requirements, ensuring longevity in varied weather conditions. Securing the slabs requires a solid mortar bed, typically mixed using sharp building sand and general-purpose cement, which creates a strong bond to keep the paved surface rigid and level.


The uniform thickness and consistent edges of these flags simplify the installation process, allowing for quicker alignment and even surface levels across large areas. Once the flags are laid and the mortar has set, applying a brush-in jointing compound between the gaps helps to restrict weed growth, allows for natural thermal movement and stabilises the entire paved structure.

A typical patio or pathway requires a sub-base depth of around 100mm. This layer should be thoroughly compacted using a wacker plate before adding a mortar bed to ensure the slabs do not shift or sink over time.

Laying flags directly onto soil or grass is not recommended. Without a proper sub-base and mortar bed, the slabs will eventually become uneven, sink into the ground and become a trip hazard when exposed to rain and regular foot traffic.

A standard mortar mix for laying concrete slabs is four parts sharp sand to one part cement. Water should be added gradually until the mixture reaches a firm, dough-like consistency that holds its shape under the weight of the slab.

Joints between concrete paving slabs should generally be kept between 10mm and 15mm wide. This provides enough space to brush in a jointing compound or mortar, allowing for natural thermal expansion and contraction without cracking.

To cut concrete slabs accurately, an angle grinder fitted with a diamond-tipped masonry blade or a mechanical block splitter is necessary. Always wear safety goggles, gloves and a dust mask when cutting concrete products.
