Wall Plugs for Every Wall Type and Load

Wall plugs are one of those small fixings that make a significant difference to how well a job holds up. The colour-coding system makes selection simple. Each colour corresponds to a specific plug diameter, drill bit size, and compatible screw gauge:

 

  • Yellow (5mm drill bit): light-duty fixings in solid walls, cable clips, small frames
  • Red (6mm drill bit): the go-to general-purpose plug for most household tasks
  • Brown (7mm drill bit): heavier items such as TV brackets, curtain poles, and shelf supports
  • Blue (10mm drill bit): heavy-duty applications, large brackets, and structural fixings

 

Always match the drill bit diameter to the plug size and use a screw 1–2mm smaller in diameter than the plug itself. Drill the hole slightly deeper than the plug length, clear out the dust, and push the plug in flush before driving the screw. For fixings going into plasterboard rather than solid masonry, plasterboard fixings are better suited, as standard plugs need solid material to expand against. Wall plugs are nearly always used alongside wood screws or concrete screws, so it's worth checking screw sizing before starting a job. Wall plugs are colour-coded to indicate their size, which in turn tells you which drill bit and screw to use. As a general guide: yellow plugs take a 5mm drill bit and suit light loads; red plugs take a 6mm drill bit and are the most common general-purpose size; brown plugs take a 7mm drill bit and are used for heavier items like curtain poles and shelving; blue plugs take a 10mm drill bit and are suited to heavy-duty structural fixings. Always check the manufacturer's guidance, as colours can vary slightly between brands.

The drill bit diameter should match the diameter of the wall plug. So a red (6mm) plug needs a 6mm masonry drill bit, a brown (7mm) plug needs a 7mm bit, and so on. Drill the hole slightly deeper than the length of the plug to allow dust to clear and the plug to sit fully flush. Using too large a drill bit is the most common cause of a plug spinning freely once the screw is driven in.

Standard plastic wall plugs are not suitable for plasterboard on their own. They rely on solid material around the hole to expand against, and plasterboard is too thin and brittle to provide this. For hollow walls, use dedicated plasterboard fixings such as spring toggles or cavity anchors, which spread the load across a wider area behind the board. These are available separately from the standard wall plug range.

A spinning plug usually means the hole is slightly too large for the plug, so there is nothing for it to grip against. This can happen if the wrong drill bit size was used, if the bit was blunt and tore the hole oversize, or if the hammer drill action crumbled soft or aerated block around the hole. To fix it, fill the hole with fast-setting filler, allow it to cure fully, then re-drill to the correct size. Alternatively, step up one plug colour (for example, from red to brown) and use the matching larger drill bit and screw.

The hole should be slightly longer than the wall plug itself, typically by around 5–10mm. This gives room for dust at the bottom of the hole and allows the plug to sit fully inside the wall rather than protruding at the surface. A useful trick is to wrap a piece of masking tape around the drill bit at the correct depth so you know when to stop. Plugs that are not fully embedded in solid material will not expand correctly and are likely to pull out under load.
