Tile Backer Boards

Tile Substrates for Bathrooms, Showers and Wet Areas

Tile backer boards provide a stable surface for tiles on walls and floors, particularly where moisture, movement or added insulation makes ordinary plasterboard unsuitable. MacBlair stocks purpose-made boards for tiling applications, with thickness and fixing method chosen for the background and expected load. The board is one part of the system, not a substitute for correct waterproofing.

On walls, fixing centres, stud spacing and maximum tile weight must meet the manufacturer’s instructions. Floors need a rigid, fully supported base so the board cannot flex under load. Choose supporting timber framing and floor materials before deciding the board layout and joint positions.

Seal joints, corners, penetrations and fixings with the compatible tape or waterproofing products specified for the wet area. The wider building materials range supports preparation work, while wall and floor insulation must remain compatible with the complete tiled build-up.

Tile Backer Boards FAQ's

Thickness depends on whether the board is fitted to a solid wall, timber or metal studs, or a floor. Follow the manufacturer’s span, fixing and tile-load tables, because thickness alone does not correct a flexible background.

Some boards have a water-resistant or waterproof core, but joints, fixings and penetrations can still require sealing. Use the complete approved waterproofing system in showers and other wet zones.

It can be used in approved floor systems when the timber deck is sound, rigid and correctly fixed. Bed and mechanically fix the board as specified, maintain movement joints and do not bridge an unstable floor.

Most systems require joints and corners to be reinforced or sealed with compatible tape and compound. Wet areas may need additional tanking, so follow the board and waterproofing manufacturer’s sequence.

Capacity depends on board type, thickness, stud spacing, fixing pattern and whether it is installed on a wall or floor. Check the declared maximum tile weight for the full construction, including adhesive and any surface finish.
