MDF is commonly chosen for interior cabinets, shelving, panelling, mouldings and painted joinery because its surface and core are consistent. Standard MDF is generally non-structural, so it should not replace a load-bearing board without a specific declaration.
Interior Boards for Cabinets, Shelving and Mouldings
MDF has a dense, smooth and consistent surface that machines cleanly for cabinets, shelving, wall panelling and painted interior joinery. MacBlair stocks sheet MDF for dry-area projects, with grade and thickness selected to suit the finished component. Its uniform core makes routing and edge profiling predictable, although cut edges need careful sealing before painting.
Standard MDF is a non-load-bearing board for dry conditions unless the product is declared otherwise. Moisture-resistant grades can suit humid interiors when specified, but they are not waterproof. Compare timber and joinery materials where a project also needs solid sections, framing or trim.
Plan fixings to avoid splitting near edges and drill pilot holes where required. Seal faces and edges with the coating system’s recommended primer. The wider building materials range supports fit-out work, while wall and acoustic insulation products can sit behind correctly detailed MDF linings.
MDF FAQ's
No. Moisture-resistant MDF is made for humid interior conditions, not permanent wetting or unprotected outdoor exposure. Seal cut edges and use it only within the manufacturer’s stated service conditions.
Shelf thickness depends on the span, depth, load and edge support. Long or heavily loaded shelves may need a thicker board, a solid lipping or intermediate support to limit sag.
Remove dust, apply a primer suited to MDF and give extra attention to porous cut edges. Light sanding between coats helps produce an even finish, but follow the paint manufacturer’s preparation and drying guidance.
Use screws intended for fibreboard, keep them away from edges and drill suitable pilot holes to reduce splitting or bulging. For repeatedly assembled joints, consider inserts or purpose-made furniture fittings instead of relying on the same screw hole.
