Water-resistant garments are intended for limited moisture or light showers. Waterproof garments use specified fabrics and construction, often including taped seams, for greater rain protection.

Waterproofs from MacBlair protect work clothing during rain, spray and wet outdoor conditions. Select a waterproof jacket, trousers or coordinated set according to exposure time and activity, checking the product specification rather than relying on appearance. Water-resistant clothing may handle a brief shower but is not intended for sustained rain.
Fabric performance is only part of the choice. Taped seams, storm flaps, cuff and hem adjustment and covered pockets reduce entry points for water. Breathability matters during active work because trapped moisture can leave inner layers damp. Check that the garment allows safe movement and does not obscure visibility or other PPE.
- Check waterproof rather than water-resistant performance.
- Look for protected seams, closures and adjustable openings.
- Balance weather protection with breathability and free movement.
Wear Waterproofs over thermal base layers and practical work trousers when conditions are cold as well as wet. Allow enough room for layers without buying so large that fabric catches on equipment. Zipped or adjustable trouser openings can simplify dressing over boots.
Clean Waterproofs according to the label so dirt and incorrect detergent do not reduce their performance. Dry fully before storage and renew the water-repellent finish only with a product approved for the fabric. Complete wet-weather protection with waterproof boots or wellingtons chosen for grip and underfoot hazards.
Waterproofs FAQs
Many are designed as overtrousers. Size them around the intended layers and check that the waist and leg openings allow movement and dressing over footwear.
Physical work produces heat and moisture. A breathable garment allows some vapour to escape, reducing dampness inside while retaining rain protection.
Clean them according to the label, then apply only a compatible wash-in or spray-on treatment if the manufacturer recommends it. Reproofing cannot repair damaged seams or fabric.
Only if they are specifically certified and marked for high-visibility performance. Colour alone does not establish the required protection class.
