Copper Pipe Jointing Supplies for Clean, Sound Connections

Soldered copper joints depend on clean preparation, controlled heat and components that match the pipe size. MacBlair stocks jointing supplies in its plumbing equipment range, alongside the wider materials needed to plan a pipework installation.

 

Cut the tube square, remove burrs and clean both mating surfaces without thinning the copper. Apply only the flux specified for the solder and fitting, keeping excess out of the tube. Potable-water work requires compatible, lead-free jointing materials approved for that service.

 

Heat the fitting evenly and let capillary action draw solder into the joint. Avoid overheating, disturbing the connection while it cools or leaving flux residue on the finished pipe. Use a heat-resistant barrier near timber, plasterboard, cables and finishes, with suitable fire precautions throughout.

 

Choose matching tube and fittings from the copper pipe range and broader pipe fittings section. Where flame work is impractical, compare compression fittings for an approved alternative.

Yes. Use lead-free solder and a compatible flux approved for potable-water plumbing, following the product and local installation requirements.

End-feed joints require solder to be fed separately. Solder-ring fittings contain a measured ring, but both still need correct preparation, flux and heating.

Flux assists wetting and limits surface oxidation during heating. Use a compatible product sparingly and clean residue away after the joint has cooled.

Common causes include water left in the pipe, dirty surfaces, poor fit, too little heat, overheating or movement before cooling. A failed joint should be remade correctly.

Use a purpose-made heat barrier, clear combustible material and keep fire-fighting equipment available. Never use a flame where the surroundings cannot be made safe.
