Start by removing loose material with paint scrapers and filling knives. Repair holes and damaged edges with the right putty or decorating filler, allow it to dry, then level the repair with sandpaper or steel wool. Clean away every trace of dust before opening the paint. It is slower than painting over the problem, but far quicker than repairing a failed finish.
Small gaps around skirting, architrave and coving can be finished with paintable decorators caulk where the product instructions allow. Before sanding or coating begins, cover floors and fixed fittings with suitable decorating surface protection.
