WD-40 multi-use product is primarily a penetrant and moisture displacer — it frees seized parts and displaces water but is not a long-lasting lubricant. Silicone spray provides lasting lubrication and is safe on rubber, plastic and wood without causing damage or staining. For door seals, window tracks and rubber components, silicone spray is the better choice. For releasing corroded bolts or rusted fixings, reach for a penetrating spray first.
Penetrating Oils, Silicone Sprays and Greases for Site and Home
MacBlair stocks a practical range of lubricants covering the most common site and home maintenance tasks. Pick up multi-purpose penetrating sprays to free seized fixings and rusted components, silicone spray for rubber seals, window tracks and door mechanisms, white lithium grease for heavy metal-to-metal applications, and dry PTFE lubricants where a clean, residue-free finish is needed. All available alongside the wider fixings, chemicals and adhesives range for a full trade-ready basket.
Choosing the right product makes a real difference. Silicone spray works on plastic, rubber and wood without staining, and won't attract dust the way oil-based sprays can. White lithium grease is better suited to outdoor hinges, gears and overhead door tracks — it stays put through wet weather and won't run. A penetrating oil is the first thing to reach for when a bolt or fixing has corroded solid. If you're regularly driving wood screws into hardwood or dense timber, running the thread across a dry lubricant first takes significant effort out of the job.
Common applications across the range include:
- Releasing seized nuts, bolts and threaded fixings with penetrating spray
- Lubricating door and window tracks, hinges, locks and sliding mechanisms
- Protecting rubber seals and plumbing components with silicone spray
- Maintaining power tools, drill bits and cutting equipment with PTFE or cutting oil
- Applying white lithium grease to gate hinges, garage door runners and outdoor metal parts
Lubricants sit alongside trade chemicals and sealants in the MacBlair range, making it straightforward to pick up everything needed for a maintenance or repair job in one order. Available for collection or delivery across Northern Ireland.
Lubricant FAQ's
For door hinges, white lithium grease or silicone spray both work well. White lithium grease lasts longer and handles outdoor hinges and heavier gate hardware better. For locks and latches, a dry PTFE lubricant or graphite-based product is preferable as it won't attract dirt or gum up the mechanism over time. Avoid using thick grease inside lock barrels.
Yes. Silicone spray is one of the few lubricants that is fully compatible with rubber, plastic and vinyl. It protects rubber seals from drying out and cracking, keeps window and door tracks running freely, and won't degrade the material. It is commonly used on plumbing fittings, uPVC window runners, and rubber gaskets. Avoid using standard penetrating oil or WD-40 on rubber as it can cause deterioration over time.
Apply a penetrating spray directly to the seized fixing and allow it to soak for at least 10 to 15 minutes — longer if the corrosion is heavy. A good penetrant works into the threads and breaks down rust. For badly seized bolts, a second application after half an hour can help considerably. Once freed, apply a light oil or anti-corrosion spray to the threads before reassembly to prevent future seizing.
PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) lubricant dries to a thin, clean film that reduces friction without leaving a greasy or sticky residue. It is the right choice for sliding mechanisms, drawer runners, chains, rollers, and areas where dust and debris must be kept out, as it doesn't attract particles the way oil-based products do. It also performs across a wide temperature range, making it useful both indoors and on exposed outdoor components.
