Compare roof pitch, structural capacity, local appearance, exposure, cost and the covering maker's system requirements. Existing roofs may also impose matching constraints.
Pitched Roof Coverings for New Work and Repairs
Slates and tiles create the primary weathering layer on a pitched roof. MacBlair stocks both covering types for new construction, extensions and repairs, allowing the finish to be selected around roof pitch, exposure, structure and appearance.
Every product has a minimum pitch, gauge, headlap and fixing specification. Slate and tile coverings also differ in unit size, weight and coverage, so calculate quantities from the actual roof dimensions rather than floor area. Matching an older roof may require a sample.
The covering is only one part of the system. Install it over the specified roof underlay and correctly graded roofing battens. Complete the high point with compatible ridge units, following the manufacturer's mechanical fixing and ventilation details.
Slates & Tiles FAQ's
Use the roof slope area and the product's coverage at the specified gauge. Add allowances for cuts, breakage, ridges, verges and future repairs.
Check profile, size, colour, interlock and weathering. Even the same model can vary between batches, so compare samples before reroofing a visible section.
The specific covering, headlap, exposure and fixing system set the limit. Use the manufacturer's declared minimum rather than a general rule for all tiles or slates.
Modern specifications normally require a calculated fixing pattern, with additional restraint at edges and exposed details. Follow the covering maker and roof design.
