Decoupling matting helps absorb lateral movement so some substrate stresses are less likely to transfer into the tiled finish.
Manage Substrate Movement Beneath Tiles
Tile matting forms a separating layer between a prepared substrate and the tiled finish. Decoupling products help manage lateral movement and reduce the risk of cracks in the background transferring directly through the tiles.
Use the system only on approved substrates and follow its requirements for primers, adhesive and joint treatment. Matting can be useful over selected screeds, concrete and timber preparations, and in some underfloor-heating build-ups. Confirm compatibility with the floor tiles before installation.
The background still needs to be sound, flat, clean and dry. Bed the matting with the specified compatible adhesive, remove trapped air and respect movement joints. Other preparation and finishing products are available across the tiling collection.
Tile Matting FAQ's
Some systems can bridge limited static cracks, but active movement and crack width must be assessed against the product specification.
Many systems can, but the heating position, adhesive, commissioning and maximum temperature must follow the system guidance.
Only products installed as a complete approved waterproofing system provide that function. Decoupling alone does not guarantee waterproofing.
Selected systems permit prepared timber substrates, but board type, thickness, rigidity, fixings and movement requirements must all be met.
