Use plywood whose declaration confirms structural use and the service class required by the design. The sheet marking, standard and manufacturer data matter more than a trade nickname such as hardwood or marine ply.
Structural Wood Sheets for Floors, Roofs and Fit-Out
Plywood is made from bonded wood veneers with adjacent layers arranged to improve stability and strength. The correct panel depends on load, face quality and the moisture conditions in service.
Check the marking or declaration of performance before using plywood structurally. A smooth face may matter for paint or visible joinery, but it does not by itself confirm structural or exterior suitability. Find supporting timber for floors, walls and roof framing and keep panel edges supported as the design requires.
Measure the cutting plan before ordering full sheets to reduce waste and unsupported joints. Roofing materials and weatherproofing products must protect roof decks correctly, while insulation for timber construction should be installed without trapping moisture against the panel.
Plywood FAQ's
Only a plywood grade declared for exterior conditions should be considered, and exposed edges and faces still need detailing and protection. Exterior-bonded plywood is not automatically suitable for permanent wet exposure or ground contact.
Thickness depends on support spacing, load, panel grade and whether the sheet is used for flooring, sheathing, roofing or lining. Follow the structural design or manufacturer span information and support all required edges.
Face grades describe the appearance and permitted defects on each side, not the panel’s structural or moisture class. Choose a better face where the sheet will be visible or finely finished, then separately verify performance for the job.
Keep cut edges away from standing water and seal or coat them where the manufacturer or finishing system requires it. Good flashing, ventilation and drainage remain necessary because an edge coating cannot correct poor weather detailing.
