Preparation Tools for Removing Paint and Smoothing Repairs

Choose a blade wide enough to bridge the repair and pull the material level with the surrounding surface. Keep the edge at a shallow angle on delicate areas, and never force a sharp blade towards a hand or body.
Once the repair has dried, finish it with decorating sandpaper and remove every trace of dust. Fine joints around trim may need paintable decorators caulk rather than rigid filler. Protect glazing, floors and adjacent finishes before scraping, then use the right paint brush for detailed edges when the surface is ready.
Scraper Filling Knives FAQ's
Choose a blade that spans the repair with room to rest on sound material at each side. A wider blade helps feather larger patches, while a narrow knife reaches small holes and corners.
Use only a scraper intended for glazing and follow its instructions. Keep the glass wet if directed, hold the blade at the correct angle and avoid scraping coated or damaged glass.
Work from a sound edge with controlled pressure and keep the blade angle shallow. Stop if the scraper gouges the substrate, and soften or abrade the coating only with a compatible method.
A slight excess can be sanded level once fully dry, but a heavy ridge creates unnecessary work. Pull the filling knife across the repair to remove most excess during application.
