Choose a level that fits the workspace while spanning enough of the surface to give a representative reading. A short torpedo level helps in confined spots, while a longer box level suits wider surfaces.
Check Level and Plumb with the Right Vial
A surface can look straight while still leaving a fitting noticeably out of level. Choose a longer level for a broad surface where it can bridge local bumps, and a torpedo level where space is tight. A magnetic base helps hold a suitable level against ferrous metalwork, leaving hands free to adjust a fitting. Its magnetic base can hold against suitable ferrous metal while you check alignment or adjust a fitting. It will not attach to timber, plastic or non-magnetic metals.
Place it on a stable surface and note the bubble position, then rotate it end for end at the same spot. The two readings should agree; repeat against a vertical surface for the plumb vial.
Level refers to a horizontal alignment and plumb to a vertical one. Use the appropriate vial and read the bubble between its reference lines.
It is useful for tight spaces and short fittings, but its short body may not reveal variations across a long surface. Use a longer level when checking a broad run.
