Match the fitting to the pipe’s actual outside diameter and the named system. Nominal imperial and metric descriptions are not always interchangeable.
Plumbing Pipework for Water, Heating and Waste Runs
Plumbing work depends on matching the pipe material, diameter and jointing method to the service. MacBlair stocks systems for water, heating, waste and appliance connections, including copper tube and fittings, plastic barrier pipe and soil pipework.
Copper can be joined with end-feed, solder-ring, push-fit or compression plumbing fittings, depending on access and the specification. Plastic systems need inserts and fittings approved for that exact pipe brand and type. Do not mix components unless the manufacturers confirm compatibility.
Below ground, MDPE water supply pipe serves a different purpose from above-ground hot and cold plumbing. Soil pipework also has its own diameters, gradients, ventilation and seal arrangements. Confirm the application before ordering by colour or size alone.
Plan supports, access and thermal movement before closing walls or floors. Add correctly spaced pipe clips and covers, pressure-test water services, and check every waste joint before finishes are fitted.
Pipe Fittings FAQ's
Yes, with an approved transition fitting and the required pipe insert on the plastic side. Follow both manufacturers’ compatibility instructions.
Some demountable or compression parts may be reused after inspection, but olives, seals and inserts can need replacement. Never reuse a damaged or distorted component.
Do not assume they do. Pipe dimensions, inserts, seals and grab rings can differ, so use a combination specifically approved by the manufacturers.
Yes. Test it by the method specified for the system, inspect every joint and correct leaks while the full run remains accessible.
