Fascia is the vertical board at the roof edge, often carrying the gutter. Soffit closes the horizontal or sloping underside between fascia and wall.
Roofline Boards for Eaves Protection and Finishing
Fascia boards finish the roof edge and provide the line for gutter brackets, while soffits close the underside of the eaves. MacBlair stocks roofline components for replacement and new work where board profile, colour and ventilation have been planned together.
Repair any rotten support timber before covering it. The fascia must be fixed to sound rafter ends or a specified backing, and soffit width should be measured after the final wall and fascia positions are known. Ventilated boards or separate strips must preserve the airflow required by the roof design.
Coordinate the roofline with rainwater guttering so bracket spacing and falls work with the fascia. Continue moisture control through eaves membrane details and maintain roof ventilation. Where timber remains exposed, select treated exterior timber to the specification.
Soffit & Fascia FAQ's
No. Damaged backing and rafter ends must be repaired first. Capping unsound timber hides the problem and leaves poor support for guttering.
Many cold roof designs require eaves ventilation through the soffit or a separate vent strip. Follow the roof's condensation-control design.
Measure the required depth, thickness, length and profile after checking the rafter-end line and gutter bracket system. Allow for corners and joints.
Do not assume ordinary paint will bond. Use the colour supplied or a coating explicitly approved for that board material and exposure.
