Timber Supports for Tiled and Slated Roofs

Roofing lath forms the regular fixing grid across rafters for slates and tiles. MacBlair's timber roof lath range should be matched to the covering, rafter spacing and structural specification.

Products used as tile battens are safety-critical and must carry the required BS 5534 grading marks. Section size, timber quality and treatment matter; coloured preservative alone is not proof of compliance. Set the gauge from the covering manufacturer's headlap and pitch instructions before fixing begins.

Install laths over the specified roofing underlay and keep joints staggered over supports. Cut ends may need preservative treatment. Finish with the selected slates or tiles, using compatible roof fixings for both battens and covering.

Roofing Lath FAQ's

Not always. Only timber graded and marked to the required roofing standard should be used as a safety-critical tile or slate batten.

The covering type and rafter spacing determine the section. Follow BS 5534, the roof design and the slate or tile manufacturer's instructions.

Use the covering dimensions, required headlap and roof pitch to set the gauge. Mark out the whole slope so courses finish correctly at eaves and ridge.

No. Treatment colour does not confirm structural grading. Check the full stamp and supporting product documentation.

Apply the approved end-grain preservative where the manufacturer or roof detail requires it, particularly at exposed verges and mortar contact.
