RPE for Dust, Fumes and Airborne Site Hazards

Respiratory Protection from MacBlair is selected for a known airborne hazard, concentration and work period. Respirators do not replace extraction, water suppression or safer work methods. Control exposure at source first, then choose RPE with adequate protection for the remaining dust, mist, fume, vapour or gas identified by the assessment.

Disposable filtering facepieces, reusable half masks and other respirators serve different hazards. Check filter class, assigned protection factor, service life and whether the equipment supplies or filters air. A particulate filter does not protect against every vapour or gas. Tight-fitting equipment requires a clean seal against the wearer’s face.

  • Identify the contaminant, concentration and exposure duration.
  • Choose sufficient protection and the correct filter type.
  • Face-fit test tight-fitting masks and check the seal every time.

Respiratory Protection that relies on a face seal must be face-fit tested for the exact model and size. Facial hair, stubble, spectacles and other eye protection can break the seal. Combine RPE with effective dust control and the rest of the required PPE equipment.

Inspect Respiratory Protection before each use, perform the specified wearer seal check and replace filters at the defined interval. Store reusable masks clean, dry and protected from contamination. Ear-loop masks should not be treated as tight-fitting RPE. Training is needed so wearers understand fitting, limitations, cleaning and when to leave the hazardous area.

Respiratory Protection FAQ's

These are classes of filtering facepiece for particles, with different protection performance. Selection must be based on the assessed exposure and required protection factor.

Tight-fitting RPE should be face-fit tested to the individual using the exact make, model and size. A different model may seal differently.

Hair in the sealing area prevents a reliable fit. A loose-fitting powered hood may be an alternative where the assessment and equipment specification permit it.

A particle filter does not automatically protect against vapours. Identify the substance and select an appropriate filter or breathing apparatus from competent guidance.

Follow the manufacturer’s schedule and workplace controls. Replace sooner if damaged, contaminated, difficult to breathe through or at the end of specified service life.
