Zinc-Coated Steel Tube for Threaded Pipework Repairs

Galvanised steel pipe is associated with threaded metal systems where the zinc coating adds corrosion protection to the outer and inner surfaces. The MacBlair category currently carries this pipe type within the wider plumbing pipework range.

Before extending an older installation, identify the service, outside diameter, nominal bore and thread standard. Similar-looking threads can bind without sealing or damage each other. Existing pipe condition matters too, because internal corrosion can reduce the bore long before an external leak appears.

Cutting and threading steel tube requires the right dies, lubricant and clamping equipment. Every cut end exposes bare steel, so the specified protection and jointing compound should be applied for the intended fluid and temperature.

Do not use this pipe for gas work unless the exact materials and system are approved and the work is completed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Where a different installation method is planned, compare copper plumbing tube and plastic barrier pipe.

Galvanised Pipe FAQ's

It is used in compatible threaded steel pipework where corrosion protection is required. The application, pressure, temperature and water-quality requirements must all be checked.

It is commonly specified by nominal bore rather than outside diameter. Match both the nominal size and thread standard to the existing fittings.

A designed transition is needed because direct contact between dissimilar metals can promote corrosion. Ask a plumber to select the correct insulating or transition fitting.

A local repair may be possible if the remaining pipe is sound. Widespread internal corrosion, low flow or repeated leaks can make replacement more sensible.

Only approved pipe, fittings and jointing materials may be used, and gas work must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
